Shyam Benegal (1934–2024) was a pioneering Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, and documentarian whose work defined the parallel cinema movement and reshaped Indian storytelling. His filmography began with Ankur (1974), a landmark in realistic cinema, followed by acclaimed works such as Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976), Bhumika (1977), Mandi (1983), Trikaal (1985), Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (1992), The Making of the Mahatma (1996), and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero (2005). He also created the iconic television series Bharat Ek Khoj (1988), based on Jawaharlal Nehru’s Discovery of India. Over his career, Benegal received 18 National Film Awards, the Filmfare Award, the Nandi Award, and international recognition for his socially conscious cinema. He was honored with the Padma Shri (1976), Padma Bhushan (1991), and India’s highest film honor, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2005), along with the ANR National Award (2013). As a Rajya Sabha member (2006–2012), he also contributed to cultural policy. His films launched the careers of actors like Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, and Naseeruddin Shah, and his legacy endures as that of a visionary who merged art with activism, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire generations.
Based on Hansa Wadkar’s memoirs, the film follows an actress’s rise to stardom and her struggles with identity and relationships.
