Shaji N. Karun

Shaji N. Karun, the acclaimed Indian filmmaker and cinematographer whose poetic visual style and humanistic themes have made him one of the most respected voices in world cinema. He began his career as a cinematographer on landmark Malayalam films before making his directorial debut with Piravi (1988), which won the Caméra d’Or – Mention Spéciale at Cannes and multiple National Film Awards. His subsequent films, including Swaham (1994), selected for the Cannes competition, Vanaprastham (1999), which won the National Film Award for Best Film, and Kutty Srank (2009), which earned three National Film Awards, further cemented his reputation as a master storyteller. His later works include Olu (2018), continuing his exploration of identity, spirituality, and loss. Over his career, Shaji N Karun has received numerous honors, including the Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from France, and served as the first Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, shaping film culture in Kerala.
