Hong Sang-soo (b. 1960, Seoul) is a prolific South Korean filmmaker and screenwriter, known for his minimalist style, improvised dialogue, and explorations of everyday relationships. He studied at Chung-Ang University, California College of the Arts, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His debut The Day a Pig Fell into the Well (1996) won critical acclaim. Notable works include Right Now, Wrong Then (2015, Golden Leopard Locarno), On the Beach at Night Alone (2017, Berlinale Best Actress for Kim Min-hee), The Novelist’s Film (2022, Berlinale Silver Bear), and In Water (2023). He has directed over 30 films, many premiering at Cannes and Berlin
