Oliver Hermanus

Oliver Hermanus (b. 1983, Cape Town) is a South African director and writer. He studied at the University of Cape Town and London Film School. His debut Shirley Adams (2009) premiered at Locarno. Beauty (2011) won the Queer Palm at Cannes. Later films include The Endless River (2015), Moffie (2019), and Living (2022, BAFTA-nominated). His latest, The History of Sound (2025), expands his exploration of intimacy and history

Synopsis

During WWI, two young men set out to record the voices and music of their countrymen. Their journey becomes a romance and a meditation on memory, intimacy, and cultural preservation.
