Fatih Akin (b. 1973, Hamburg) is a German-Turkish filmmaker whose work explores identity, migration, and cultural conflict. He studied visual communications at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg and debuted with Short Sharp Shock (1998). His breakthrough came with Head-On (2004, Berlin Golden Bear), followed by The Edge of Heaven (2007, Cannes Best Screenplay), Soul Kitchen (2009), and In the Fade (2017, Golden Globe).
On the remote island of Amrum during World War II, a young boy witnesses the collapse of innocence as his community is torn apart by war. Through encounters with soldiers, refugees, and family members, he learns about survival, morality, and the fragility of human bonds. Akin blends historical realism with emotional intimacy, creating a coming-of-age tale that reflects on Germany’s wartime past while exploring universal themes of fear, hope, and resilience. The island becomes both a sanctuary and a prison, where the boy’s journey mirrors the nation’s struggle to reconcile innocence with the brutality of history.
