Marking a significant moment for collective filmmaking, the Chitralekha Film Cooperative Society was formally relaunched at a function held at Nila Theatre, Thiruvananthapuram, as part of the 30th IFFK.

Renowned filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, inaugurating the event, said that cinema should not be judged solely by the profits it generates or the number of film festivals it enters, but by how effectively it reaches the widest possible audience. Emphasising the evolving nature of cinema, he remarked that film lovers must learn to understand the grammar of modern cinematic language.

The relaunch was held under the banner Chitralekha Film Cooperative Limited. Founded in 1965 with its headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, the Chitralekha Film Society has played a significant role in shaping Malayalam cinema. Its objectives include nurturing film culture in Kerala, introducing world cinema to local audiences, and producing and distributing quality films.

At the event, Chairman Tony Thomas announced the launch of an international one-minute film festival titled ‘Ekam’, to be organised under the auspices of Chitralekha. He explained that the concept of Ekam is based on one minute, one idea, one sound, inviting filmmakers from across the world to explore concise and powerful storytelling. Responding to queries about the one-minute format, he noted that in such a short duration, not a single frame can be wasted and an idea can be expressed with maximum impact.

Tony Thomas also announced that a new film would be produced under the direction of Adoor Gopalakrishnan.

Meera Sahib, former member of Chitralekha Film Cooperative Limited, and Santosh Damodaran, Managing Director, were also present at the event.
