A film’s success depends on the dedication of youngsters: T.D. Ramakrishnan

Echoing the spirit of a new cinematic generation, writer T.D. Ramakrishnan observed that the remarkable success of Malayalam cinema stems from the commitment and creativity of a large pool of passionate young talents. He was speaking at the national seminar “Malayalam Cinema: India’s New Cinematic Compass”, held on 17 December 2025 as part of the 30th IFFK.

Rooted in tradition yet open to the world, Malayalam cinema’s achievements in the 21st century reflect a rich legacy combined with contemporary curiosity. In the post-Covid era, OTT platforms have widened access to world cinema and new technologies, nurturing both commercially successful films and works of artistic depth. Ramakrishnan affirmed that Malayalam cinema will continue to act as a guiding force for Indian cinema.

Tracing its evolving language and form, director Sudhir Mishra analysed the transformation of Malayalam cinema through films such as Jallikattu, Bhramayugam, and Manjummal Boys. He noted that Manjummal Boys transcends the simple tale of friendship, emerging as a distinctive cinematic experience shaped by precise and innovative filmmaking techniques.

Experimentation as identity marked another turning point, with Rahul Sadashivan redefining horror by blending black-and-white aesthetics into a fresh narrative form in Bhramayugam. Similarly, Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Jallikattu captured the raw pulse of Kerala’s life itself. Films grounded in political clarity and strong ideas, it was noted, signal the future direction of Malayalam cinema.

Addressing the practical realities behind artistic ambition, actress and director Aditya Baby spoke about navigating financial challenges while continuing to create cinema of artistic merit.

The session concluded in the presence of emerging voices and industry leaders, including young director Natesh Hegde and KSCA Secretary C. Ajoy, underscoring the collective energy shaping Malayalam cinema’s path forward.
