Mascha Schilinski (b. 1984, Berlin) is a German filmmaker known for her lyrical and emotionally resonant storytelling. She studied directing at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg and gained recognition with her debut Dark Blue Girl (2017). She has also directed shorts and television episodes, including Die Katze (2015) and Cologne P.D. (2019–2020). Her latest feature Sound of Falling (2025) expands her exploration of generational trauma and identity.
Told across four generations, the film follows the lives of girls growing up on a German farm. Through shifting timelines and perspectives, it explores how trauma, memory, and identity are passed down, shaping each generation’s experience. Schilinski uses poetic imagery and intimate storytelling to weave a tapestry of rural life, showing how personal histories intersect with broader social changes. The farm becomes a stage for resilience and inheritance, where the echoes of the past haunt the present. The film is a meditation on how families carry both wounds and strength across time, offering a lyrical exploration of generational continuity.
